This property is prominently situated on Kalakaua Avenue, Waikiki’s main thoroughfare, which is a highly coveted retail location. Annual sales for stores with prime Kalakaua street frontage rank among the best in the world and rival top retail destinations in New York, San Francisco, and Paris. This project is one of several that are attracting mainland retailers to Waikiki and strengthening a retail core that merchandises specialty fashion, accessories, and luxury items. RPG worked with the City to base the project’s architectural concept on the original Waikiki Theater design and key architectural features, such as the art-deco metal grilles. RPG also encountered archeological issues that were respectfully processed through the local community and the Oahu Burial Council. The tropical art deco theme incorporates second floor “lanai” outdoor decks for the restaurant uses. The project commenced construction in November 2005, and the center opened in December 2006.
